Prior to the official announcement of the Gear S3 it was leaked online that the upcoming smartwatch from Samsung is going to feature a Speedometer app which will allow users to see just how fast they’re going. It also meant that the smartwatch is going to have an integrated GPS which turned out to be true when it was announced a couple of months ago. Only a few days after the Gear S3 was released, Samsung today released the official Speedometer app for its new smartwatch.

Samsung first had to release a firmware update that added preliminary support for this app. That minor update was released last week. With the stage set for its arrival, the official Speedometer app was rolled out today for the Gear S3.

Simply called Speedometer for Gear, the app works with the Gear S3 by using its GPS to ascertain the user’s speed in real-time. Data is displayed using easy to understand graphics while previous data is logged. Users can easily see their highest and lowest speeds at a glance.

It’s not a revolutionary feature by any means but it does add good functionality to the Gear S3 that’s aimed at those who like to live an active lifestyle. Perhaps the app might come in handy when you’re skiing down a mountain and want to know how fast you’re going.

Speedometer for Gear is now available as a free download for the Gear S3 from Samsung Apps.
