ios-10-release-dateIn June earlier this year, it was rumored that iOS 10 would introduce a “dark” mode to the operating system. Basically this would give the entire OS a darker theme which should be easier on the eyes in low-light situations, but since iOS 10 was released, that feature is nowhere to be seen.

However according to a series of tweet by Sonny Dickson who has in the past accurately leaked Apple-related information, that feature could arrive in iOS 10.3. Dickson writes that iOS 10.3’s first beta is expected to be seeded to developers/beta testers on the 10th of January, 2017. The beta will introduce a new feature called “theater mode” which will be represented by a popcorn-shaped icon in Control Center.

When 9to5Mac reached out to Dickson for clarification, he suggested that theater mode could very well be Apple’s version of Dark Mode, and that the codename given to iOS 10.3 is “Erie”. He also notes that his source has provided him with good intel in the past, so it is possible that what he posted could be the real deal.

In any case it will be interesting to see a dark mode introduced to iOS. If it does come, Apple could beat Google to the punch as the latter company has reportedly been trying to get a dark mode to Android for the past few years, even appearing in the beta, but with no success for whatever reason.
