Recent rumors have suggested that the iPhone 8 may not feature a fingerprint sensor integrated into the display. The company is expected to ditch the home button on the iPhone 8 which means it would have to relocate the fingerprint sensor. If a new report is believed, the iPhone 8 may not have a fingerprint sensor at all.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is testing 3D face scanning technology that will enable users to unlock their iPhone instead of having to rely on a fingerprint sensor. The face scanning technology may also be used for logging into sites, authenticating payments, and launching secure apps.

This will reportedly be powered by a new 3D sensor which may also be augmented by an iris scanner. The technology is said to work even when the handset is lying flat on a table and not just when it’s being held close to the face.

While the scribe doesn’t claim that this new technology will certainly replace Touch ID on the iPhone 8, its sources say that Apple’s intention behind these tests is to make that happen. If it’s able to get everything working properly in time then we might very well see the company doing away with Touch ID altogether.

A 3D face sensor has been rumored before as well for the iPhone 8 so who knows, Apple may very well be testing such a technology. Whether or not it will make its way to the iPhone 8 remains to be seen.
