If you’re looking to be able to stream video content from your home to another device while on the go, Plex is probably the system for you. In a way you could think of it as your own personal Netflix with video content that you control and customize according to your own likings and preferences.

The only downside to Plex is that usually it involves dedicated hardware, at least for those who are more serious about their streaming, which makes it less user-friendly for those who want to use it casually. This is why Plex introduced its own Plex Cloud service, but unfortunately in an announcement by the company, will be shutting down.

According to Plex, “We’ve made the difficult decision to shut down the Plex Cloud service on November 30th, 2018. As you may know, we haven’t allowed any new Plex Cloud servers since February of this year, and since then we’ve been actively working on ways to address various issues while keeping costs under control.”

The company adds, “We hold ourselves to a high standard, and unfortunately, after a lot of investigation and thought, we haven’t found a solution capable of delivering a truly first class Plex experience to Plex Cloud users at a reasonable cost.” It is unclear if this will change in the future if Plex ever finds a solution, but until then maybe you should start looking into investing in some dedicated hardware.
