If there is one thing Apple does right, it would be in software updates. While the company would no doubt prefer customers to continuously update their devices, they have done a good job of ensuring that even devices 5-6 years old keep receiving major updates. Now as some of you know, OnePlus plans to launch their own smart TV.

If you were worried about software updates, it seems that the company has reassured customers that they planning on providing updates for at least three years. The upcoming OnePlus TV will be powered by an “optimized” version of Android TV. According to OnePlus, “We are able to work alongside Google to optimize the Android TV user experience and offer our users Android TV updates for at least 3 years.”

Some have pointed out that this is actually a bit worrisome. This is because unlike smartphones that we switch every 2-3 years, TVs usually stay put for years on end. This means that OnePlus expects us to buy a new TV after 3 years or forgo any future updates. Of course, if you don’t really care about the TV’s software and just want to use it to play your games and watch your shows, then this isn’t really a big deal.

In any case, hopefully we’ll learn more about the OnePlus TV when the device launches. Perhaps it could come with an affordable enough price tag where it could be cheap enough to be upgraded every few years.
