Both Microsoft and Sony are expected to launch their next-gen consoles soon. With the previous-gen consoles, Sony very handily and easily took the lead, which we imagine was in part due to Microsoft pricing themselves out of the market at the start, allowing Sony to gain a substantial lead over the competition.

However, could the roles be reversed with the next-gen consoles? At least one analyst doesn’t think so. According to Piers Harding-Rolls of IHS Markit Technology, he believes that the PS5 could outdo the Xbox Series X. “I expect PS5 to outsell Xbox Series X in 2020, but for both platforms to sell more consoles at launch than both the PS4 and Xbox One did back in 2013.”

Harding-Rolls claims that this is largely due to brand loyalty and as a result, he expects that there will be less brand switching. “One new factor for this upcoming generation is the impact of backwards compatibility on brand loyalty and audience transition. I think we’ll see less brand switching as a result.”

The analyst also goes on to claim that Nintendo’s Switch console could very well be the best-selling console of the year, but whether or not that will come true remains to be seen. The Switch has managed to prove itself as a worthy competitor, although its overall sales does seem to pale in comparison to what Sony has sold so far with its PS4.
