Due to the fact that games contain a lot of textures and elements, streaming them would require you to have a pretty decent internet connection as the transfer of data might be quite large. This is why for the most part, game streaming services tend to stream at lower resolutions to help ensure a smoother experience.

However, for those who are subscribed to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, you might be interested to learn that according to Windows Central, it seems that Microsoft is testing out supporting 1080p streaming. As it stands, Xbox Game Pass only streams at 720p which makes the service one of the lowest resolutions available.

As it stands, other services like Google Stadia offer streams at 1080p for the base “free” tier of the service, so it’s nice to see that Microsoft is working on bumping the resolution of its games played through Xbox Game Pass. There’s currently no word on when the update will be released and made available to all gamers, but at the moment it seems to be tested internally.

Bumping the resolution would make Microsoft’s service more compelling because unlike Stadia or NVIDIA GeForce Now where it requires you to own a copy of the game to stream it, Xbox Game Pass is kind of like the Netflix of games where you get access to a catalogue of games with your subscription.
