Apple has officially unveiled iOS 27, the next major operating system update for the iPhone. The release focuses on significant performance enhancements, a redesigned search architecture, and widespread system refinements. It maintains backward compatibility with all devices capable of running iOS 26 (even some we didn’t think would be updated), and newer models.

Performance and Design Enhancements

The update introduces substantial speed and efficiency improvements across core system functions. According to Apple, applications launch 30% faster, and AirDrop data transfers are 80% quicker. To improve responsiveness on older hardware, iOS 27 incorporates an optimized CPU scheduler. Visually, the user interface updates the “Liquid Glass” design language with a new transparency adjustment slider, sharper icon rendering, and deeper layers of refraction.

Rebuilt Search and App Updates

A central feature of iOS 27 is a completely rebuilt search index designed to enhance Spotlight and overall system-wide queries. Upon installation, the OS indexes device context to deliver more precise, relevant results. Similarly, the Mail application features an improved ranking system to optimize search efficiency.

Key native applications and ecosystem integrations receive notable functional updates:

  • Photos: iCloud Shared Albums now allows full-resolution media sharing with Android and Windows users.
  • Health: Features expanded capabilities for cycle tracking, alongside new perimenopause and menopause symptom logging and education.
  • AirPods: Apple’s wireless headphones gain a custom EQ configuration.
  • Apple Maps: The Flyover feature is upgraded with richer aerial imagery.

Additional System Features

The update includes hundreds of minor feature additions and refinements across safety, accessibility, and interface customization:

  • Trust & Safety: Updates to Apple Child Accounts and parental controls.
  • Multilingual Support: Expanded keyboards and transcription support for Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, and various Indigenous languages.
  • Connectivity: Faster AirPlay connections, improved Wi-Fi stability, and swifter HomeKit accessory pairing.

The features will roll out gradually through upcoming developer and public beta cycles prior to the official public release.

Compatible iPhone Models

Here are the iPhone models that will be compatible with Apple’s new iOS 27. A good surprise was too see that, contrary to what rumors said, the iPhone 11 series and iPhone SE 2nd gen. will both be updated:
