WhatsApp is currently developing a new feature aimed at reminding users of their contacts’ birthdays, mirroring functionality long established on its sister platform, Facebook. Discovered in the code of a recent Android beta version by the tracking site WABetaInfo, the tool introduces a dedicated tab where upcoming birthdays are organized chronologically.

The foundation for this feature stems from recent regulatory requirements. WhatsApp recently began collecting the birth years of users in specific regions to comply with mandatory age-verification laws.

Initially, this data was gathered strictly for legal compliance and remained hidden from other users. However, Meta is now leveraging this database to introduce social features within the messaging app, creating a practical application out of a regulatory mandate.

Privacy Concerns and Limitations

For the system to function, a contact must have their date of birth registered with the platform. Despite the social utility, the feature has sparked privacy discussions due to its current implementation constraints:

  • Missing Privacy Toggles: In its initial development phase, the software lacks specific privacy settings. Users currently cannot hide their birthday from their contact list while keeping it visible to the platform for compliance.

  • Expected Updates: Industry analysts expect that comprehensive privacy controls—allowing users to opt out of sharing their birthday with contacts—will be integrated before a stable public release.

Deployment and Additional Updates

The birthday reminder feature is currently confined to the WhatsApp beta code for Android, meaning a global rollout for standard users may take time.

Alongside this development, the messaging platform has introduced other updates, including a fully optimized application version tailored for smartwatches, as well as a redesigned information page for group chats.
