Smart home robotics specialist iRobot showcased its latest design concept, the Roomba Duo, at IFA 2026. The prototype tests consumer appetite for heavy-duty household automation by introducing a nested robotic system, where a compact auxiliary unit is housed directly inside a significantly larger cleaning machine. 

The core apparatus serves as a heavy-duty floor maintenance platform intended to replace upright vacuum cleaners and traditional mopping rigs. Measuring approximately 60 centimeters in height and weighing 30 kilograms, this substantial base system accommodates high-capacity water reservoirs and delivers high-performance suction power. In addition to regular dry debris extraction, the primary device integrates an active steam sanitation system designed to deep-clean hard floors. 

To overcome the inherent physical limitations of its bulky exterior, the Roomba Duo relies on an internal secondary unit. When the primary machine encounters narrow pathways, tight corners, or clearance beneath low-profile furniture, the main chassis reclines to deploy the smaller robotic cleaner. This secondary unit navigates restricted spaces to execute sweeping and damp mopping tasks before docking back inside the main carrier. 

Presented at the Berlin trade expo as a development concept, the Roomba Duo functions primarily as an exploratory platform for evaluating consumer demand for multi-tier home cleaning appliances. Consequently, the company has not confirmed whether the system will transition into commercial production or reach store shelves in this specific configuration. 

Because the project remains in an exploratory design phase, iRobot has refrained from announcing retail availability or official pricing details. Nevertheless, industry estimates suggest that if the dual-robot hardware enters mass production, its final retail price could easily exceed the $1,700 benchmark typical of existing flagship floor-care solutions.

The prototype underscores a broader industry push toward modular, multi-tier autonomy capable of handling both heavy-duty scrubbing and detailed perimeter maintenance within a single integrated solution.
