With more news surrounding a glasses-free 3D display existence, AUO is promising that its panel, which the company is showcasing at the FPD International 2010 will be the first 3D panel that will not have a deadzone; prior 3D technologies required users to be around the center of the screen to view the images or videos. The panels will be shown off in a 15.6-inch 1080p HD notebook and a 10.1-inch WXVGA resolution tablet: “AUO combines lenticular lens 3D technology with SuperD’s naked eye 3D solution to create deadzone-free 15.6″ notebook and 10.1″ tablet PC 3D panels that do not require the use of special glasses. This technology will provide consumers with a more convenient and comfortable 3D viewing experience.” The company is expecting mass production of the panels to begin in the third quarter 2011.
The cool thing about these panels is that they can display 2D and 3D concurrently, and the user also has the option to switch between either modes. The company says that “The audience can still read clearly the text as they enjoy the visually stunning 3D images. This development satisfies an essential need felt by all users of 3D information displays.” Whether the development of these 3D panels will lead to content beyond movies to include interactive Web sites and digital books that combine text, videos, and graphics is still unknown, but the technology is there for content to evolve.
Without being constrained by viewing angles and glasses, the 3D experience on AUO’s display can be shared by more people who may wish to view the laptop’s or tablet’s display together.
