While safety on the road has improved by leaps and bounds ever since the very first car hit the market, there is always room for improvement. We have seen the like of smart headlights that will adapt to various conditions automatically, pedestrian detection, reverse sensors and reverse cameras, the works – to help make it a safer drive for you. However, there is one particular area of driving that would require an overhaul, and that would be blind spots in a car. Jaguar intends to tackle the issue of blind spots with their 360-degree Virtual Urban Windscreen.

As you can see in the video above, it can be rather challenging, difficult even, to spot all of the possible road hazard out there. Mirrors and cameras can only go so far to depict what is located behind you, but the roof pillars of your car will still be able to hide careless pedestrian, not to mention the more aggressive drivers that share the same road with you.

With the Virtual Urban Windscreen, it will make use of cameras to create “transparent” pillars, where it then shows off threats that are in your blind spot so that you would have adequate time to react to the situation. Could this be too distracting? Not really, since the screen would generate a ghost car that informs you of where to turn, as though you were right behind a friend. This is a technology that is still in its infancy, so do not expect to see it in full bow anytime soon.
