Star Wars: Episode IX was expected to be released in May 2019 but it was later delayed to the end of 2019 instead, although given that most of the Star Wars releases have taken place towards the end of the year, we guess this isn’t too surprising. The good news is that it looks like progress on the film is just fine.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, director J.J. Abrams revealed that the script for the movie has been completed. Abrams has been working with screenwriter Chris Terrio (who also worked on Argo and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice) on the script which is now said to have been completed, and that they are looking to begin filming the movie this coming summer.

That being said, Abrams understandably did not give away anything about the movie, although presumably it will most likely conclude the current trilogy and will culminate in a fight between Rey and Kylo Ren. Episode IX was supposed to have been directed by Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow but he later dropped out and Abrams was brought in as his replacement.

This wouldn’t be Abrams’ first gig directing a Star Wars movie as he was behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we guess it’s kind of fitting that he’s ending the current trilogy. Rian Johnson, the director for The Last Jedi, is expected to be behind the next set of Star Wars movies which will be written by HBO’s Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
