Apple is a company that prefers relying on itself if possible, at least that’s the impression that they give as they typically control both the hardware and software of its products. In fact certain hardware components are designed by Apple, like their A-series of chipsets, instead of relying on third-party companies like Qualcomm.

This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that according to a report from Bloomberg, it appears that Apple could be looking to develop their own displays next. The report claims that Apple has made a significant investment into the development of MicroLED displays, and are using a secret manufacturing facility near its HQ in California to build and test these displays out.

It is also said that MicroLEDs are more difficult to produce than OLEDs (which are known to be notoriously difficult to make) and Apple had nearly killed the project a year ago, but presumably they are moving forwards with it. MicroLED is said to be more energy-efficient compared to OLEDs and will help make future devices slimmer and brighter.

This is actually not the first time we are hearing about Apple’s interest in MicroLED. The company has filed patents in the past with rumors that 2018’s Apple Watch could come with such a display. However when exactly these displays will make their debut remains to be seen, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
