Unlike traditional timepieces, smartwatches typically require to be charged on a daily basis. We haven’t really gotten to the point where we can wear our smartwatches for weeks on end before needing a recharge, and this is why with every new generation, it is hoped that battery life is one of the improvements we will see.

Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case with the Apple Watch Series 4. According to a report from MacRumors, one of their readers pointed them towards the Apple Watch Series 4’s spec sheet in which it was revealed that Apple’s new smartwatches actually packs a smaller battery than their predecessors.

The 44mm model features a 1.12 watt-hours battery, which is versus the 42mm Apple Watch Series 3 which had a 1.34 watt-hours rated battery. The 40mm Series 4 was also listed to have a 0.86 watt-hours battery, while the 38mm Series 3 had a 1.07 watt-hours battery. Oddly enough despite the smaller batteries, Apple seems to still be touting the same 18 hour battery life.

Of course this is possible as the new hardware used could be more energy efficient. It could also be software-related in which it could also be better at managing the device’s battery, and of course your mileage may vary as how you use your watch will also impact its battery life. In any case if Apple’s numbers are true, then you should still be able to eke out the same battery life as the Series 3, although it is admittedly disappointing that bigger batteries weren’t used.
