At the moment, most of the major tech companies have their own digital voice assistants. Amazon has Alexa, Apple has Siri, Google has Google Assistant, Microsoft has Cortana, and Samsung has Bixby. Unsurprisingly, Facebook now wants in on the action and according to a report from CNBC, they have heard from their sources that the company is indeed developing its own voice assistant software.

Facebook has since confirmed that this is true in a statement made to Reuters where a spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We are working to develop voice and AI assistant technologies that may work across our family of AR/VR products including Portal, Oculus and future products.”

According to the report, Facebook has been developing its own digital assistant since 2018, although it is unclear as to when the feature might be launched. We should point out that this isn’t the first time that Facebook has worked on their own digital assistant. Several years ago, Facebook created the M assistant for use with Messenger, similar to how Google Assistant, but it never gained any traction.

We’re not sure if Facebook will fare any better this time around, especially given the privacy scandals the company has found themselves embroiled in over and over again, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
