Want to know if your favorite artist has a new song or album out? It seems that over in the US, Spotify is going to launch a test in which they will be allowing artists to pay the platform money, where they will then be able to send notifications to Spotify users to let them know about a new release.

According to Spotify, “In this test, we will let artist teams pay to sponsor these recommendations, giving them the power to tell their listeners on Spotify—across both our Free and Premium tiers—about their latest release. You’ll now hear from a wider range of artists, which means you’re less likely to miss out on new releases from your favorites.”

However, if you’re worried that this will result in your phone being spammed by notifications from artists, who we’re sure labels will definitely want to promote, Spotify has reassured users that you won’t. Instead, recommendations will continue to be powered by your music tastes and preferences, so it’s not as if you will start getting notified by artists that you have no interest in.

In case that wasn’t enough and you’re not a fan of being spammed by notifications anyway, Spotify will also be giving users the option of disabling these notifications, but the company notes that disabling these notifications will only be available to Spotify Premium users.
