When you think of Xiaomi, there’s a very good chance that you think of the company’s smartphones. However, Xiaomi does way more than just make smartphones. For those unfamiliar, Xiaomi dabbles in all kinds of products ranging from electric screwdrivers to smart lights to robot vacuum cleaners and electric scooters.

This is why it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to learn that according to a report from Reuters, they have heard from their sources that apparently Xiaomi is interested in making a leap into the electric car space. The report claims that Xiaomi might team up with Great Wall Motor who will handle the manufacturing side of things.

Should this report prove to be true, it shouldn’t be a surprise. While electric cars aren’t exactly Xiaomi’s area of expertise, there is an increasing number of new entrants to the automobile market that specialize in smart and electric cars. In fact, Apple is also rumored to be considering making a move into the space, although the company hasn’t found a manufacturing partner yet and could be considering turning to their current iPhone, iPad, and Mac manufacturers.

It will be interesting to see what happens if Xiaomi were to enter the automotive space, and more importantly how they might compete against more established carmakers who have had decades of experience in the space.
