Samsung’s first Gear VR headset came out a couple of years ago, initially it was positioned as a product meant more for enthusiasts and developers as opposed to the general public. However the company did confirm earlier this year that the consumer version of its virtual reality headset will be available for purchase soon. Today is that day, you can now pre-order the consumer version of the Samsung Gear VR headset.

This version of the Gear VR costs $99, the reason why this virtual reality headset costs less is because it doesn’t have its own display. You slot in a Galaxy smartphone and Gear VR uses that display to show content in virtual reality.

Samsung says that the consumer version of Gear VR is compatible with the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5. All customers receive a 16GB microSD card with the headset.

Gear VR has been built by Samsung in collaboration with Oculus, it doesn’t quite offer the experience you’d expect from the Oculus Rift, but the Gear VR is good for casual virtual reality and at $99 it’s not out of reach for most customers.

Pre-orders for the consumer version of the Gear VR can now be placed at Best Buy, the device costs $99 and will start shipping soon.
