A few years ago, it was discovered that Spotify was working on their own digital assistant similar to the likes of Siri and Google Assistant. Now it looks like that digital assistant got a bit smarter thanks to Spotify introducing a hands-free feature that lets users activate the assistant using a wake word.

The feature was initially spotted by GSMArena who were notified on their phone that Spotify was introducing the feature. Basically whenever the Spotify app is open, all users need to do is say, “Hey Spotify” to launch the digital assistant and command it to do what you want of it, such as playing songs, playlists, and so on.

However, it is a bit limited because like we said, it will require that users have to have the app open in order for it to work. This means that if you’re looking to launch the Spotify app from a different app, you won’t be able to do so with the wake word, but it might still be useful for those who keep the app open when they are playing songs.

It should be noted that for iOS, Apple Music is still the default music app, but it has been discovered in iOS 14.5 beta that users will soon be able to change Siri’s default music player. This means that if you’re looking for a hands-free Spotify experience, you’ll be able to do so but through Siri. It’s obviously different but it could be a decent compromise.
