So, earlier this year during Google I/O 2021, Google announced a new partnership with Samsung for wearables where both companies would be working together on a new wearable platform. The new platform isn’t getting a new name per se, but will rather be known as Wear OS 3 moving forwards.

That being said, some have wondered what this means for current devices and whether or not they will be upgraded to the new platform. There is some good and bad news on that front. The good news is that yes, existing devices can be upgraded to the new OS, but the bad news is that the list of compatible devices is very small, and this includes:

  • Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS
  • Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Cellular/LTE
  • Mobvoi TicWatch E3

Yup, out of all the current Wear OS powered smartwatches, basically only three existing models will be upgraded. The announcement from Google does mention that future smartwatches from Mobvoi and Fossil will also eventually get the upgrade, but as far as existing devices are concerned, it looks like only three made the cut.

We’re not sure why the list is so short, but for those who own a smartwatch not on this list, it is unclear what the future means for you, but if you want all the new features from Wear OS 3, then it looks like you’ll have no choice but to spring for a new smartwatch.
