Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, faces significant production bottlenecks ahead of its scheduled October release, likely constraining initial retail market availability.

Supply chain sources cited by China’s Jiemian News report that final assembly yields at Foxconn reached only slightly above 60% as of mid-September. Under Apple’s rigorous quality control benchmarks, industry observers suggest the complex manufacturing line may require an additional six to twelve months to achieve commercially mature production yields.

Foxconn continues adjusting factory machinery, assembly protocols, and operational manufacturing parameters to scale the dual-screen handset efficiently. Component suppliers are closely monitoring whether Apple will relax strict quality criteria to expedite delivery throughput.

A separate report from MyDrivers indicates that a primary contract manufacturer prompted Apple to choose between prioritizing production yield and expanding gross device output. Accelerating assembly lines could yield higher unit volume but risks accumulating defective hardware units and inflating overall factory scrap expenses.

Component manufacturing hurdles exacerbate delays across the broader supply ecosystem. Samsung Display’s foldable OLED panels and intricate hinge mechanisms have encountered notable yield constraints, postponed delivery timelines, and engineering revisions.

Delays in receiving these vital parts diminish Foxconn’s operational window to calibrate its delicate final assembly lines. The complex hinge incorporates over 100 components beneath a 3D-printed enclosure. Apple previously evaluated Liquid Metal alloy for select hinge parts before re-evaluating its approach before commencing commercial mass production.

Apple’s global stocking target for the iPhone Duo throughout 2026 reportedly ranges between six million and eight million units. This represents a conservative allocation compared to the typical 20 million to 30 million units manufactured for mainstream flagship iPhone Pro models across standard full product lifecycles. Nevertheless, separate internal sales guidance projects customer demand exceeding five million units.

Unveiled during Apple’s special media launch on September 9, the iPhone Duo features a dual-screen form factor connecting into a single continuous frame with a foldable inner OLED display. Starting at a retail price of $1,999 in the United States, official customer pre-orders open October 16, with commercial retail availability slated for October 23.
