google-home-bases-fabric-metalGoogle Home is a pretty handy device especially if you’re already used to what the “OK Google” function can do for you. The good news is that if you own Chromecast-connected devices or an Android TV by Sony, you’ll be pleased to learn that Sony has announced an upcoming firmware update that will let you control those devices through Google Home and Google Assistant.

According to Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics, “Now you can get the awesome sound and video quality of Sony products working together with Google Home. This functionality is available today for the Chromecast built-in Sony speakers and Android TV Sony 4K HDR televisions consumers already have at home, or plan to purchase for the holidays. This additional functionality is another example of Sony’s commitment to customer choice by delivering new and innovative technologies.”

This doesn’t really change how the device works, it just gives users more options and more devices to control. So for example Google Home could be the main control hub and you could ask it to play music/songs on your Sony speakers which might be your main setup. Alternatively you could even play it on both the Google Home and Sony speakers for a multi-room setup.

The firmware update should have already been made available for your devices, so all you’ll have to do is update it and you should be good to go. You can check out the list of compatible Sony speakers on the company’s website.
