Apple has officially released iOS 27, introducing new features powered by Apple Intelligence, refinements to the Liquid Glass interface, and performance improvements. The company has also launched iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and tvOS 27.
iOS 27: New Features and Compatibility
The visual changes in iOS 27 are evolutionary rather than a complete redesign. Apple has refined Liquid Glass with improved contrast and readability. Apple Intelligence expands Siri’s capabilities, allowing the assistant to handle more complex questions and perform actions across apps using personal information stored on the device. The Photos app also gains new AI-powered generation and editing tools.
Apple says the update improves app launch speeds, AirDrop transfers, and image loading. Another notable addition is iPhone Handoff, which allows the same phone number to be used on two iPhones, although support is limited to selected carriers. Users can also share their location for customized durations. CarPlay now supports video playback while the vehicle is parked, while Messages receives new synchronization and search options.
The update supports the same iPhone models as the previous generation, beginning with the iPhone 11 and second-generation iPhone SE. Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16-series device or newer.
iPadOS and macOS Changes
iPadOS 27 drops support for several older models, including the third-generation iPad Air, third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, eighth-generation iPad, and fifth-generation iPad mini. Apple Intelligence requires an M1 chip or newer, or an iPad mini with the A17 Pro.
Meanwhile, macOS 27 Golden Gate ends official support for Intel-based Macs, focusing exclusively on Apple silicon. Compatible devices include select Macs released from 2020 onward, depending on the model.
watchOS and tvOS Updates
watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or second-generation iPhone SE running iOS 27. It supports Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and Apple Watch SE 3. tvOS 27 requires an Apple TV 4K from the second generation onward.
