You would think that with Spotify being available on iOS devices for so long, and with the Apple Watch having been around for years, that an official Spotify app for the Apple Watch would have been launched a long time ago. As many Spotify users know by now, this wasn’t the case, at least until now.

Spotify has recently started testing an official app for the Apple Watch with beta testers of the iPhone app starting to gain access to the Apple Watch version of the app. In a statement issued by Spotify with regards to the testing of the Apple Watch app, they said, “We’re always testing new products and experiences, but have no further news to share at this time.”

So far based on the tests, it looks like the app for the Apple Watch is rather basic in nature where for the most part it will just be used as another way to control music playback. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since we’re sure that many users will probably be able to appreciate that they can control playback without having to take their phones out all the time.

It is unclear if more functionality will be brought to the app beyond just playback control, such as support for offline music playback for Spotify Premium users, a feature that will come in handy for those times you don’t want to bring your phone with you, like to the gym.
